Biomass Cogeneration
Introduction -- Brompton Cogeneration Plant -- Corner Brook Cogeneration Plant

Brompton Biomass Cogeneration Plant

Kruger Energy has built and commissioned a 23-MW biomass cogeneration plant at the Kruger paper mill in Brompton (Sherbrooke), Québec.

The plant, which went on line in 2007, includes a hog boiler which burns papermill sludge, bark and other wood residue, as well as a steam turbine wich generates electrical energy that is sold to Hydro-Québec Distribution under a 20-year power purchase agreement and provides the steam required to dry the paper.

Highlights

  • Production of green energy
  • Greenhouse gas emissions reduced by 83,000 metric tons annually, which compares to removing 18,000 vehicles from the road
  • Paper mill sludge, bark and particle waste diverted from landfills (600 dry metric tons per day)
  • Less bark waste reduces the risk of leachate contamination
  • Reduced fossil fuel consumption (30 million liters annually)
  • Air quality improvement
  • No new electrical line installed

Impact reduction measures:

  • Silencers installed to prevent increased noise levels
  • Limited handling of sludge to eliminate potential odors
  • Training program for heavy-truck drivers to ensure speed limits and noise reduction measures are observed
  • Efficient cooling tower used to minimize the vapor plume
  • New facility integrated with the current mill
    to minimize visual impact
